30 September 2010 – Spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce

D was not impressed with the recent crop of tomatoes from the Farmers’ Market and the Bowl, so he cooked them into a tomato sauce. I was impressed with the tomato sauce! He grated Romano over the top, which enhanced … Continue reading

29 September 2010 – Egyptian Dinner ar Mezze!

Maurice, the owner of Mezze, is Egyptian, so we had confidence this would be a fascinating meal. Indeed, it was when Maurice mentioned having done an Egyptian meal (during a tasting of Eric Stauffenegger wine imports) that we decided to … Continue reading

28 September 2010 – Spaghetti with mushrooms, parsley, and Romano; tomatoes and gazpacho on the side

Another quick and wonderful meal from D: The mushroom/pine nut/parsley pasta is one of his signature dishes. The tomatoes are from Dirty Girl Farms. This is the last of the gazpacho – probably the last batch of 2010.

27 September 2010 – Spaghetti with leftover steak; gazpacho on the side

Spaghetti with the rest of the sirloin steak in it… D’s concoction – they always work! He bought a little under a pound of sirloin steak on the 25th for dinner, we had two sandwiches for lunch the next day, … Continue reading

26 September 2010 – Gazpacho for a hot day’s night

Was waiting for a chance to have this again… Gazpacho recipe the Victory Garden Cookbook, which I think is a PBS companion book. Outstanding resource. More to say. (Begun on the 29th)

25 September 2010 – Grilled sirloin steak, mushroome, roasted tomatoes with oil, garlic, and herbs

Well, this has certainly been an oddly meaty week. I’ll write this one up later b/c it has more nice photos to come. It was a Christmas dinner, with one of the wines D buys for me monthly as a … Continue reading

24 September 2010 – Tomato sauce over spaghetti; mushrooms

D made this exceptional, light tomato sauce. I will look into how he did this. I think he cooked more of the mushrooms like last nights, but not sure. More when I get a chance… (Begun the 29th)

23 September 2010 – Pork and Tapas before the Berkeley Symphony concert

D is SO on a roll… Gave our friend T our extra ticket for the Symphony, and she allowed as how she’d bring over a bottle of Sean Minor Pinot Noir, that we all had tasted at the Bowl’s second … Continue reading

22 September 2010 – Ham sandwich before the Planning Commission meeting

Yet another Planning Commission meeting at which we needed to speak. D made us some good sandwiches with Saag’s Black Forest (I think) ham, and Acme bread – probably sour batard. Split a little Dirty Girl Farms tomato and had … Continue reading

21 September 2010 – Grilled chicken with caramelized carrots and scallions

Another great recipe from PotagerĀ  by Georgeanne Brennan. The chicken is grilled; the scalliona and sliced carrots are cooked separately in butter, slowly, until very well done, and the chicken is served over them. IIRC there is tarragon in the … Continue reading

20 September 2010 – Ratatouille soup

D ventured into the unexplored regions of Potager by Georgeanne Brennan to find this unusual and interesting soup recipe. It looked as though he were cooking a ratatouille, but in the end he blended it into a soup. There is … Continue reading

19 September 2010 – Grilled chicken breasts; fresh corn and shell beans

D found this corn and bean recipe in Potager by Georgeanne Brennan, one of the best cookbooks we’ve ever bought. He defrosted some chicken breasts and we had a split one between us. They were marinated in lemon, thyme, and … Continue reading

18 September 2010 – Spaghetti with mushrooms, pinenuts, and parsley, with shaved pecorino Romano; avocados and tomatoes with balsamic vinegar

This is a specialty of D’s. I really like it. We just had a little tonight because we’d been to the “Kermit Party” for lunch and had Christopher Lee’s brilliant Bouillibaise with grilled and oiled Acme baguettes, with an excellent … Continue reading

17 September 2010 – Cooking with Rosetta

This was a bit of an adventure – we took a cooking class with Rosetta Costantino (check out her gorgeous blog) on the theme of peperoncini, a signature ingredient of Calabria (the toe of the Italian boot). I had the … Continue reading

16 September 2010 – Random leftover items make a yummy dinner.

D noticed that he had forgotten to cook the corn he just bought for lunch, so we had that for dinner. He took out some of the Oaxacan mozzarella-like cheese I used for my chard pizza on Labor Day, and … Continue reading

15 September 2010 – BLTs again!

D came home to realize there was very little bread or much of anything else. After some conversation, he decided (with my encouragement) that having BLTs again would be ok, if he could find good bread in the freezer to … Continue reading

14 September 2010 – BLTs; summer squash with mushrooms

Another simple but delicious dinner. D made bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches on his own bread. He sauteed up some summer squash with mushrooms, and also prepared some plain, fresh, cold veggies. We had the leftover Protocolo and the one … Continue reading

13 September 2010 – Omelette with eggplant pesto; fresh tomato

D cooking now. I actually suggested this idea yesterday at lunch, when we had leftover eggplant pesto. Normally D hates getting suggestions about what to cook – and I love getting them – but this suited him well, since he … Continue reading

12 September 2010 – Leftover grilled beef, corn and avocado salsa, and potato salad

We sort of collaborated on this as I recall, but IIRC I had laundry to take care of so D did most of it. He cut up the last 1/3 of the pound of beef we had the previous night, … Continue reading

11 September 2010 – New York steak with corn and avocado salsa; potato salad with tarragon

D and R were at the Grand Lake Market today, and we planned for D to buy me some good meat for dinner from Prather Ranch. I found a few recipes in the one of the Weber cookbooks – always … Continue reading

10 September 2010 – Caprese salad; hard sausage, olives, and carrot

Still wallowing in the fact that we can get our favorite Dirty Girl Farm dry-farmed Early Girl tomatoes. I got to go to Cheese Board for a change, and bought Gustosella mozzarella di bufalo, which is The. Best. I got … Continue reading

9 September 2010 – Bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches; avocado and tomato salad

I had this sudden flash that we never have BLTsĀ  because we think of them when it’s not tomato season. So now is the time. I went to the Bowl and managed to get several things we needed, counted and … Continue reading

8 September 2010 – Pesto and bruschetta after the neighborhood meeting

We had a meeting of our neighborhood association – which, as co-chair, I led – to finalize a statement to the City Council and the Planning Commission about their plans to put 75-foot buildings encroaching on our neighborhood. Remarkably, though … Continue reading

7 September 2010 – Pizza from Arizmendi

Left late and there was no bread, so I decided to stop at Arizmendi, just before they closed at 7pm, and pick up a pizza. The pizza had Roma tomatoes, onions, and gorgonzola cheese, with rosemary oil painted generously over … Continue reading

6 September 2010 – Pizza with chard and goat cheese

D&R were going to be late getting out of their show, so I was on my own for dinner. I made this pizza b/c there was still some goat cheese to use up. Also, it’s probably my favorite pizza at … Continue reading
